The Joy List: July 7

Hi there, my gorgeous readers!

We don’t have a New Yorker of the Week today. Do you know someone (including yourself!) who should be featured? Forward them this form. Foster fur babies are definitely welcome to be featured, as well.

Now, onto the GIF and the fun things:

Tired of psychiatrists who just give you five minutes and pull out a prescription pad?

Enter: Francesca Rome-Marie. She's a Johns Hopkins trained psychiatric nurse practitioner who runs a holistic therapy and somatic practice. Unlike most therapists though, she can also do lab work, recommend supplements, and prescribe medications. Francesca works with people of all ages, backgrounds, and identities. Many of her patients are part of LGBTQIA+ communities (with many trans and non-binary individuals), and are also creatives of some type.

She specializes in depression, ADHD, anxiety, and trauma. Francesca works with only a small group of patients so she always has time and attention to devote to each individual. She provides creative, modern, and non-judgmental care. Learn more here and sign up for a free discovery call.

Gatherings

Double check details before you go, and contact the organizers with questions! The Joy List does not run these events.

Tuesday, July 8: Hudson Yards Hosts Reading Rhythms

You are invited to experience this free unique reading party with live music centered around social connection. Bring a book of your choice —perhaps a favorite by Ruth Ware— to experience silent reading periods and meet new people through facilitated group discussions, where it’s encouraged to share ideas and literary themes.

Free. 5 to 7 PM. Hudson Yards. Info here.

Tuesday, July 8: Write to Read Salon Vol IX: Letters I Never Sent My Ex

Welcome to the Write to Read, an anonymous storytelling salon where you witness people's never-before-told confessions .

You’ll be invited to write an unsent letter — to a past love, a future self, a secret you’ve never spoken. And then, the magic unfolds: you'll read a letter written by someone else, and witness a guest artist transform it into a moving live performance.

$20. 5:30 to 8:30 PM. Info here.

Thursday, July 10: Full Moon Breathwork

Gather under the full moon this Thursday with Kimberly Fondu in Prospect Park for a breathwork ceremony to release what no longer serves and make space for what wants to shine. Attune to nature's rhythm in high summer amidst moonlight, the magic of the park, & the warmth of community.

Pay-what-you-can, 7:30-9:30pm Sullivan Hill, Prospect Park. Info here.

Saturday, July 12: Field Day

FIELD DAY: Brought to you by NARC, Dear Neighborhood and Open Invite! Join us for a day full of games from kickball to dodgeball, sack races and more. We're playing for a good cause, with teams competing to donate a pot of money from ticket sales to one of our partner charities! At the end of Field Day, the team with the highest total score—a combination of game points and Purpose Points—will choose which nonprofit receives 50% of the donation fund. The other two will receive 25% each.

$22 or more. 12 to 4 PM. Prospect Park. Info here.

Saturday, July 12: Hyggehiking Bronx' Eastern Forests & Coves

Come explore the forests, islands, woods, and wildlife sanctuaries of the Eastern Bronx. Each hygge hike is an exploration of the green spaces of our city where we can discuss the projects and communities we're excited about, dive into thoughtful discussions, and meet people who can help make NYC feel like a smaller, closer-knit community. On Saturday, July 12th, we'll wander Pelham Bay Park, trek through the Thomas Pell Wildlife Sanctuary, then enjoy sunset and conversation at a waterfront food court in City Island Fishing Village.

Free ($20 suggested). 10am-10pm. Malsori Coffee Bar + 7 mile hike. Info here.

Saturday, July 12: Intro to Aikido Class

A fun and invigorating introduction to the beautiful art of Aikido. Experience a sense of inner quietude and euphoria. Explore mind-body connection in a joyful way with a supportive community.

Book Clubs Are The New Run Clubs

Ready to meet new people but don't like to run...or run with other people? After School's bite-sized book club is the perfect alternative...

💦 No sweaty panting conversations…unless you want to 😉

🔥 Flex your mind, not your PRs 🧠

😮‍💨 No grunting, just groaning over good ideas (and maybe a little tension)

You know you should post consistently on LinkedIn… but the idea gives you IBS?

The 4th cohort of Make LinkedIn Weird starts July 16. (And yes, this is me, Jillian from The Joy List.)

Each week we’ll:

  • Learn a new LI skill

  • Do writing exercises to practice

  • Get feedback on posts

  • Virtually hold hands and share our ups and downs

Two spots have already been snagged before I even shared publicly.

Will you be one of the remaining 6?

That's it for this edition. Try something new this week, friends!
