The Joy List: March 30

Hi again, my scrumptious readers!

We don’t have a New Yorker of the Week today. So definitely don’t share this form in local NYC community chats that you’re a part of.

And definitely don’t encourage people to apply and find love and friendship.

Definitely don’t do that.

As per usual, you can submit your events to the newsletter here, and pay for an ad here.

Now, onto the GIF and the good stuff:

It's America's 250th birthday. Get to know her!

Jillian, The Joy List lady, here. I am so stoked to share that one of my favorite teachers, Daniel Golliher, is running a FREE reading group for anyone who wants to learn about America’s history.

It’s nationwide, but extra special for New Yorkers, because Daniel will be running some field trips and office hours. If you’ve ever wanted to learn more about American history, this is a great way to get some accountability AND community!

New York's Hottest Club is Civics Class

Want to dive deep into NYC history specifically? This class is for YOU! I, Jillian Richardson, have taken this class and can tell you that you’ll learn a TON.

Get ready to get your attention span back, because you’re about to do lots of reading, memorizing, and attending government meetings. It’s time to be a good citizen! (Oh, and meet other sweet, nerdy folks who love learning.)

Gatherings

Double check details before you go, and contact the organizers with questions! The Joy List does not run these events.

Monday, March 30: Sincere Singles Social

A guided event for single folks aged 20-50 who crave more meaningful connection in their love lives. Through playful exercises, deep conversations, and intimate skill-building, you'll meet others who care about growth, not games.

Tuesday, March 31: An Evening of Embodied Presence

A somatic group experience designed as an antidote to the pace of modern life — a space to slow down, drop into the body, and connect authentically with others. The evening moves through four progressive practices: somatic movement, grounding breathwork, guided meditation, and a closing sharing circle. No experience required; simply arrive as you are.

$35 (sliding scale), 6-7:30PM, Reforesters Laboratory. Info here.

Tuesday, March 31: Should We Break Up Big Tech?

Should we break up big tech platforms? Or is this just the natural course of capitalism? A Columbia Law Professor and a Manhattan Institute senior fellow debate.

$15, 6:30PM, 49 Elizabeth Street, 6th Floor. Info here.

Tuesday, March 31: How We Built This: Stories from Grassroots Communities

An evening of conversation and connection with NYC-based grassroots community builders. Through their stories, you'll hear about the journey of starting and sustaining a community — the initial spark, the values that guide their work, and how they navigate challenges along the way. Come to listen, ask questions, and discover new ways to engage with communities across NYC.

Free, 7-8:30PM, 417 Grand St, Brooklyn. Info here.

Wednesday, April 1: Underbelly: The Art of Slowing Down

Step out of the demands of a loud, habituated, and wired world. Step into a softer, subtler, unspoken space. Slow down long enough to arrive under the noise so we can truly listen and respond in the moment. Underbelly is a slower movement space with live music by Derek Miller — and this will be the last one for a while.

$25, 7-9:30PM, 68 Jay St. #605A. Info here.

Wednesday, April 1: The Sparkle: A Fresh Take on Dating & Friending

A playful, interactive night designed to spark chemistry, deepen connection, and bring strangers together in ways that go far beyond small talk. Through rotating, creative prompts — ranging from lighthearted games to more meaningful moments — you'll laugh, open up, and maybe even feel that rare "spark" with someone new. Whether you're looking for romance, new friends, or just a fun human night out, this inclusive experience welcomes all genders, orientations, and connection styles.
