The Joy List: November 4

Hi there, friend!

We’re skipping the New Yorker of the Week today. Instead, I’m going to feature a ton of events where you can go to get some space from all of the election news this week.

There will be a lot of uncertainty and stress, and potentially multiple days where we won’t know how this election will swing. That can lead to anxiety, and potentially falling back on unhelpful coping mechanisms. So it’s important to have a self-care plan! (Stephanie Foo has some great posts on this topic.)

Please feel free to forward this to anyone who you think might want some extra TLC during this weird time. (And if you’re new here and want this in your inbox every week, hi! You can sign up here.)

Now, onto the good stuff:

Gatherings

Double check details before you go, and contact the organizers with questions! The Joy List does not run these events.

Monday, November 4: Banking for Kamala

Ready to make a difference in this upcoming election? You’ve got a few options:

I did my first phone bank last week, and it was much less stressful than I was expecting. I mostly was calling registered democrats to make sure they sent in their mail-in ballot, or had a plan to vote on election day.

You get a script, and the script changes depending on what the person you’re talking to says. Surprisingly simple once you get past the training!

Free. Whenever you can! Links above.

Tuesday, November 5: CX Town Hall & Election Watch Party

This election night, before the results start coming in, let's sit together to share our experiences, discuss how we feel, metabolize what we're going through, and prepare ourselves for whatever is to come. In a convening somewhere between a Quaker meeting and an Un-conference, we will summon the power of community to provide resilience through challenging times.

The discussion will be moderated by CX member and Scholar-in-Residence, Douglas Rushkoff PhD, a cultural philosopher, professor, documentarian, podcast host, and author of twenty books. CX members and guests will be joined by subscribers of Rushkoff’s Team Human podcast and friends of Psychedelics for Climate Action.

Then, starting at 9PM when the polls close, we will livestream the news coverage of the results. To process the intense energy of the evening, we will have a Reiki Master on hand to work with groups and individuals. As always, our LumoOmbro bars will be open, serving much-needed craft cocktails, non-alcoholic elixirs, and lite snacks.

In a world that can often feel devoid of interest and meaningful connection, we bring readers together to reconnect with our love of learning, to experience the wonder of beautiful venues and curated music, and to gather amongst all of the people who want to be in that very same room.

Presence and listening will be our guides during this collective cooperative musical adventure, which is open to everyone regardless of previous musical experience. Our premise being that music is our essential nature and sharing music is an essential part of human experience.

Rosen Method Bodywork

Ever felt like you wanted to cry with your massage therapist? Or have your talk therapist place their hands on you in a safe and supportive way? If so, you might try Rosen Method Bodywork. A type of somatic therapy, Rosen Method is performed on a massage table and uses a non-manipulative, listening touch that allows the receiver to feel into tense muscles storing emotions. Many come away from these sessions feeling a little clearer, a little freer, and a little more like themselves. Sessions are $75.

That's it for this edition. Try something new this week, friends!
