The Joy List: Oct 5

Hi again, my fall beauties!

Our New Yorker of the Week today is Rachel. She’s 47, lives in Queens, and is looking for friendship and love.

Email [email protected] if you’re interested in connecting.

And per usual:

Purchase an ad to promote your business. Great for coaches and long-term classes, as well as any event you want to promote more than a week in advance.

Share events with facilitated connection that you think should be featured (for free.)

Submit yourself (or an adoptable animal) to be the New Yorker of the Week here

Now, onto Rachel:

How would someone who loves you describe you?

Funny, unabashed, smart, intuitive. A responsible free spirit and a great friend. The person you want on the adventure (and she'll likely organize it).

What sorts of things do you want to do with your friends?

Karaoke, deep chats and laughs over delicious food and drink, hiking, traveling, dancing, going to the theater or live music and most definitely beach! I share a house in Cherry Grove, Fire Island over the summer.

What's something that people might not guess about you?

I'm a reiki master. While I am quite ongoing and social, I do need some sweet and soft downtime. And I'm a big mush to those I'm close with.

Are you looking for love?

She/her pronouns and pansexual. Looking for my person - my partner, lover, adventure buddy. Someone who has done the work and knows how to love and communicate. Who can really hang and laugh and understands that it's not what life throws at you, but how you handle it.

Anything else that the Joy List community can help you with?

If the spirit moves you, please follow me @rachelpaulagreen and send me acting and comedy work!

Gatherings

Double check details before you go, and contact the organizers with questions! The Joy List does not run these events.

Monday, October 5: Procrastination

Why is it so hard to do the things you know you need to do, even the ones you actually want to do? In this Lifeshop, we'll break down the real mechanics of procrastination: what we're actually putting off, why it works in the short term, and how to move through our own blocks. The good news: you're not lazy, and you can get un-stuck. Come on your own and leave with tools to finally start the things that matter (plus a room full of people who get it).

$25-$55, 5:45-7:30 PM, 199 N 8th St, Williamsburg. Info here.

Monday, October 5: October Circlesing

Come play with singing, body percussion, and movement in a participatory flow rooted in Música do Círculo, a practice of collaborative improvisation. No musical experience or particular skill is necessary —the focus here is on connecting and creating something together, not on the quality of the "music" that is made. Come as you are and experience a playful, inclusive way of making music with other people.

$15 Suggested, 6:30-9pm, South Oxford Space, 138 S Oxford St. Info here.

Tuesday, October 6: Millennial Speed Dating

We'll be offering "big talk" conversation prompts to get you started, and we'll have lots of structure to make sure that you actually talk to people and that it's not awkward. Not feeling like answering a particular question? No worries, we'll have plenty to choose from, like, "When are you the happiest?" and, "If you were going to become close friends with me, what would I need to know about you?" We'll give you ground rules to make sure you feel comfortable and safe sharing as much of yourself as possible while still feeling in complete control of how much you share.

$45. 7 to 9 PM. Anais Brooklyn. Info here.

Wednesday, October 7: Craft Club - Meetup #30 & Brewery Tour @ KCBC

Craft Club is a way to explore the NYC beer scene with like-minded people. Every month we meet at a different brewery - doesn't matter if you're deep into beer or just curious to explore, all are welcome.

Free, 6:30-8:30pm, 381 Troutman St, Brooklyn, NY 11237. Info here.

Friday, October 9: National Coming Out Day Contra Dance

In honor of National Coming Out Day, Village Contra invites you to an LGBTQ+ and friends contra dance starting with a free intro lesson at 7:30. Dance your heart out with the thumping bass and disco lights (but without the sticky floor or expensive coat check). Contra dancing is an easy-to-learn partner dance style with no fancy footwork. Come alone or with friends (no partner required); and no dancer will be turned away for lack of funds.

$15-30, 7:30-11 PM, 213 E 82nd St, NY NY. Info here.

Sunday, October 11: Read & Reset Ritual: Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself

Sometimes you need a little space between who you've been and who you're becoming, so you can live intentionally instead of on autopilot. Join us for a Read & Reset Ritual with women who love personal growth books and meaningful conversation.

We'll begin with meditation and cacao, move into guided conversation around Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself by Joe Dispenza, and close with tea, creativity, and one small thing you'll take forward to practice. You don't need to have finished—or even started—the book, so grab a spot with code RESET for $5 off.

$36, 3-4:45 PM, 229 E 60th Street. Info here.

Sunday, October 11: Walk & Taste: Coffee, Chocolate, and How the Prized Became Ordinary

Join us for a guided walk in the East Village featuring craft chocolate tastings, specialty coffee, and meaningful conversation. We'll visit Dark Matter Coffee, Moon Coffee Lab, Economy Candy, Roni-Sue's Chocolates, and Daniel Corpuz Chocolatier.

$30, 3-5:30 PM, 1 E 1st St, New York, NY 10003. Info here.

Sunday, October 11; Discover The Birds In Central Park

Join me (That Quirky Bird Girl) for a guided bird walk through one of the world's most iconic urban birding destinations. Our beginner walk together is designed to help you notice the incredible wildlife that's been around you all along.

Together, we'll search for colorful songbirds, woodpeckers, hawks, herons, and seasonal migrants while learning simple tips for spotting and identifying birds on your own.

$10. 11 AM to 12 PM. Central Park. Info here.

That’s it for this edition!

Happy spooky season,

Jillian
