The Joy List: October 14

Hi there, friend!

Our New Yorker of the Week is Jeff. He’s 34, lives in Brooklyn, and is looking for friendship and love. Reach out to [email protected] if you’re interested in connecting!

Ready to make some new friends and/or go on some cute dates yourself? Fill out the application here, you fabulous fall leaf!

Now, onto the fun stuff:

How would someone who loves you describe you?

A friend recently told me that my foremost romantic asset is that I'm well-balanced: I live an active lifestyle, and try to put myself out there, whether that's joining writing groups, organizing camping trips, participating in a pickleball league, performing at quirky DIY comedy shows, and generally trying to build relationships with people from different walks of life.

On the other hand, I err on the more sensitive side, so I'm just as inclined to spend the afternoon comforting a friend-in-need. I try to strike a balance between an inner urge to keep challenging myself, and an occasionally-opposing urge to find a sense of meaning and purpose rooted in helping others. I like dumb physical humor. I like high brow critique. You get the point. Lastly, for those who care, I'm 6'1''. Can send photo ID with proof.

What sorts of things do you want to do with your friends?

Cherished friendship activities include but are not limited to: armchair philosophizing and/or psychologizing, getting competitive over low-stakes games, be it board games or pickleball (admittedly, pickleball is higher stakes, but I'll keep it chill), karaoke, dancing (to pop, and not at crowded clubs at 4 am), going to and discussing artsy movies, co-working on personal writing projects, sharing and constructively critiquing aforementioned personal writing projects, biking around the city, checking out random cultural events. Going out to eat is nice too, but I generally prefer active fun over passive pleasure, but active fun can just mean going for a cheeky jaunt around the park. Same with travel: it has its place, but I'm more interested in pursuing an enriching lifestyle and fostering a strong local community at home, than living through wanderlust.

What's something that people might not guess about you?

I've had to deal with a lot of chronic pain and bodily instability issues throughout the years, so I know way more about anatomy and niche exercise modalities than I should. Same goes for somatic therapy techniques: I had a tough year or two. So, despite my otherwise skeptical/sarcastic demeanor, I'm pretty well-versed in all that spiritual healing jazz. Oh, and despite my previous quip about travel and wanderlust, I've done stints in a considerably wide-ranging set of places around the world.

Are you looking for love? Tell me about the type of person you're looking for!

Yes, looking for love! He/Him, interested in women. A healthy mix of sincerity and levity, as well as a tolerance for the frequency with which I have to pee, is all I ask for! Erring on the more independent side helps too.

Anything else that the Joy List community can help you with?

Just a glimmer of hope that we can find true love in this loveless dystopia we find ourselves in!! For anyone reading this, don't give up hope!!

The scarlet threads of Red Shibari are woven with intention, an offering to tether your soul to its deepest strengths. The more bound you are, the freer you become. Next, purify yourself through an ancient ritual. Surrender to the power of St. Andrew’s Cross, where your negativity will be beaten out of you, leaving behind only the purest form of who you are meant to be. Finally, the Demon Poodle Hounds of Hell will be summoned to alleviate the suffering of this realm by extracting the darkness from a chosen host body, leaving behind a vessel of pure light. Their primal energy is not to be taken lightly.
