The Joy List: October 21

Hi there, friend!

Our New Yorker of the Week is Janice. She’s 30, lives in Uptown Manhattan, and is looking for friendship and love. Reach out to [email protected] if you’re interested in connecting!

Ready to make some new friends and/or go on some cute dates yourself? Fill out the application here, you glorious gourd!

Now, onto the fun stuff:

How would someone who loves you describe you?

My friends would call me a great listener, an organized trip captain, and funny. My family would describe me as having selective hearing, a messy bedroom, and the occasional hit joke.

I feel my feelings in a big way, but I always strive to maintain perspective and a positive outlook on life. I like to think these same qualities make me someone that my loved ones can turn to when they need support or a laugh. I'm fairly extroverted but trust me, I definitely enjoy the occasional evening to myself.

I love to learn, explore, and try new things. I love storytelling, sharing stories, and hearing other people's stories.

What sorts of things do you want to do with your friends?

I have a theatre background and love things like shows, movies, and books. I love to read and usually have a couple of novels going at once. I don't get out to concerts and sporting events as much as I would like, but I'm super enthusiastic once I'm there. (A ballpark hot dog and beer is one of life's greatest joys.) I also enjoy trivia nights, game nights, and movie marathons with friends. I am always down for karaoke and getting on the dance floor. Although, my favorite dance floor is a wedding reception - I'm not really one for clubs. I would love to go to one of those Matinee dance parties where I can be home and in my pajamas by 10 PM. These days one of my favorite activities is to grab my best friend and take a long walk to "see where the city takes us." It usually takes us to margaritas and nachos.

What's something that people might not guess about you?

I can drive stick and I'm great at parallel parking.

Are you looking for love? Tell me about the type of person you're looking for!

I'm looking for love! Young woman seeks young man... as the saying goes. If the personal ad worked for Jimmy Stewart in "The Shop Around the Corner", maybe it will work for me?

I'm looking for someone kind, with a sense of humor and adventure about life. I'm drawn to guys who approach the world with compassion and a level head, hopefully with snacks in their bag. I'm usually drawn to lovable grumps. We don't have to have all the same activities and passions, but I firmly believe in supporting each other. I'll cheer on your pick-up game and I'm hoping you will want to go to a show or two with me.

Anything else that the Joy List community can help you with?

I'm also open to being set up. If you don't feel we're a match, but you have an awesome single guy in your life - let me know! I firmly believe there's still a place for love in the world and enough to go around.

Oh, and recommendations for ASL classes in the city. I'd like to learn!

“People Who Thrive” is a new monthly gathering for people going after their goals, in community. At each meeting, a speaker talks for 10 minutes about a time in their life or their career when they asked for help, and receiving that help had a transformative impact. Then, everyone has one minute to address the group and share their elevator pitch, their “ask” (something they need help with), and an “offer” (a way they can be of service to others). When the floor is open for networking, it’s easy to walk right up to someone you can help or someone who can help you and strike up a conversation.
