The Joy List: October 7

Hi there, friend!

Our New Yorker of the Week is Audrey. She’s 27, lives in Astoria, and is looking for friendship. Reach out to [email protected] if you’re interested in connecting!

Ready to make some new friends and/or go on some cute dates yourself? Fill out the application here, you delectable delicata squash!

Now, onto the fun stuff:

How would someone who loves you describe you?

I'm politically-minded, soft-spoken, and genuine. I love animals, especially rats, cats, and monkeys and Anne Rice. I'm a bit of a modern Luddite and feel very passionately about responsible tech/AI use.

(Damn, this is a hard question to answer!)

What sorts of things do you want to do with your friends?

I want to get out and go to cool events in the city; I'm thinking movie screenings, book talks, workshops. I'm not very athletic but would also enjoy shooting hoops, playing beer league sports, adult dodgeball, etc. I'm not a huge nightlife person but I do like beer and pubs in particular. :) I'd like to get to know other people who work in interesting fields/have an interest passion project going on, and whose lives are different from my own.

What's something that people might not guess about you?

I translate adult web comics from Korean to English on the side. It pays peanuts but I've learned a lot from it (despite the spiritual damage it's done to my soul).

Are you looking for love? Tell me about the type of person you're looking for!

I'm not looking for love! I have a wonderful boyfriend named Tommy.

Anything else that the Joy List community can help you with?

I'd love to get updates about events going on in the city!

Gatherings

Double check details before you go, and contact the organizers with questions! The Joy List does not run these events.

Tuesday, October 8: Gaia Open Mic

This open mic is a unique opportunity to play with an audience, not just for them. Come experience the joys of getting the audience singing your original music, creating a collaborative soundscape for your poem, or inviting them to drum along to your story!

We'll start by making a little music together - singing some pretty chords around together, some fun call & response, that sort of thing - and then kick off our night of sharing. In this opening ceremony, we'll share some fun tricks for getting the audience participating in your art, and we encourage you to try them out!

Donation-based. 6 to 9 PM. Arts On Site, 12 Saint Marks Place. Info here.

Tuesday, October 8: Conductor: A Game of Agency and Art, Power and Play

Conductor is a game played in a group of 5-20. The actions of choice are primarily sonic, musical, performative, conversational and relational. The conductor can conduct by giving commands verbally, or they can use gesture and sound to elicit changes in the group. Conducting usually lasts around 3-5 minutes, and then another conductor takes their place.

Our workshop will begin with brief check-ins, agreements and warmups, and then we’ll dive into playing the game. Our main intention will be to workshop the game, to craft it, to get better at it, to develop the mysterious artistry contained within it, and unlock this game’s unlimited potential.
